This beauty was found by Laszlo Veres on a You Tube video of an old Dick Clark Bandstand show. Dick was interviewing the Chordettes (Lollipop) and you can hear the malaphor at 3:21 of the video:

I just wanted to get it out of my chest
Posted: April 24, 2013 Filed under: chest | Tags: blended idioms, Boston Red Sox, chest, congruent conflation, david ortiz, expressions, get it off my chest, humor, language, malaphors, mixed idioms, out of my system, words Leave a commentThis congruent conflation mixes “get it out of my system” and “get it off my chest”, both meaning to unburden oneself. This was spoken by Boston Red Sox player David Ortiz‘ in response to his emotional pregame speech:
don’t think there was one human being who wasn’t affected by what we got
going on down here,” Ortiz said. “This past week, I was very emotional,
very angry about the whole situation. I had to get that out of my chest
and just make sure that our fans and everybody in the nation knows that
this is a great nation, and part of it was how everybody supported each
other when this thing went down. I’m happy to be a part of this
nation.”

Well put, Papi. Isn’t it great to have him back?

It was a hands down case
Posted: April 8, 2013 Filed under: BODY PARTS, hand | Tags: blended idioms, congruent conflation, expressions, hands down, humor, language, malaphors, slam dunk, words Leave a commentThis is a congruent conflation of “hands down” and “slam dunk”, the first an adverb and the second a noun, both meaning easily. The context reveals the reader meant to say slam dunk, as he was referring to an arbitration case with a former employer that he expected to win. A big thank you to Mike Kovacs who heard this one on NPR’s This American Life last week.
It will probably go belly under
Posted: March 9, 2013 Filed under: belly, BODY PARTS | Tags: belly up, blended idioms, congruent conflation, expressions, go under, humor, language, malaphors, mixed idioms, words 2 CommentsThe context of this malaphor was in reference to a newly opened restaurant that probably will not survive. This is a congruent conflation of “going belly up” and “going under”, both meaning business failure. Again, direction seems to be the hang up in this one (and many other previously posted ones), and of course that both phrases have the same meaning. A big thank you to Jody Compton for serving this one up!
One hand scratching the other
Posted: August 16, 2012 Filed under: ACTION, BODY PARTS | Tags: blended idioms, congruent conflation, expressions, hand, malaphors, mixed idioms, scratch, wash, words Leave a commentThis is a mix up of two similar meaning idioms – “one hand washing the other” and ” you scratch my back, I’ll scratch yours” (reciprocal help). These malaphors that mix idioms having the same or similar meaning are also called congruent conflations.
