This is a nice congruent conflation of “put a bug in (one’s) ear” and “plant a seed in (one’s) head”, both meaning to give someone a hint about something. Maybe an ear of corn? A tip of the hat to Cheryl Rosato for hearing this one. Cheryl is my illustrator for the three malaphor books published on Amazon. Check her work out. She’s the best!

Did she do an illustration for giving someone the cold finger?
