That’s a hot potato issue

Last week Samantha Guthrie from the Today Show, in responding to a controversial topic, uttered this malaphor.  It is a mash up of “hot potato”  (something that is difficult to deal with) and “hot button issue” (an issue that people feel strongly about).  A malaphor salute to Mike Kovacs for spotting this one.

They dug their own snare

This conflation of “dug their own grave” and “caught in a snare” was spoken by former U.S. Senator Alan Simpson on the Today show last week, referring to Congress and the President not acting yet on the approaching fiscal cliff.  Thank you to my old friend Dave Thorp for spotting this one.
