Dead as a button

At a golf outing, one of the players hit a nice tee shot and another exclaimed that the shot was “dead as a button”. This is a conflation of “dead as a doornail” (truly dead) and “on the button” (accurate or exactly right). “Dead on” was probably also swirling around the brain, as it also means exactly right. Kudos to Sandor Kovacs for sharing this one.

    And “cute as a button”?

Yes, that could definitely be in the mix!

LOL, maybe the golfer was cute as a button! Finding this website has been a real comfort. I notice malaphors ALL THE TIME. They’ve been frustrating (especially when no one else seems to notice or care!) for years and were the WORST during a medical grad program, full of millennials (no offense, millennials; I’m right on that cusp). It’s nice to be in good, observant company here. Thank you for doing this. πŸ™‚

Great! If you hear one, please send it in. Let me know where you heard it and the context. Glad you enjoy them!
