That set off red flags

This was uttered by Elliot Broidy on the Chris Hayes Show on May 22.  It is a congruent conflation of “set off alarms” and “raised red flags”, both meaning a sign indicating imminent danger.  The idiom “red flags” has been the subject of another malaphor recently posted.  “I smell red flags” is a conflation of “smell trouble” and “red flag”.  https://malaphors.com/2018/05/04/i-smell-red-flags/

A big thanks once again to Frank King for hearing this one.
